Historical Regatta 2016
The historical regatta is an annual event not to be missed for lovers of rowing Venetian style, which will be held on Sunday 4 September 2016. Before the race a historical procession of sixteenth-century boats, led by the characteristic Bucintoro will parading along the Grand Canal, evoking the welcome given in 1489 to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, who gave up the throne in favour of Venice. Adorned boats will carry along the parade, the doge, the dogaressa and all the highest officers of the judiciary, in a faithful recreation of the glorious past of one of the most powerful and influential maritime republics of the Mediterranean. The race takes place in 4 competitions by category and by type of boat: the caorlina, la mascareta, pupparin, and of course, the gondola, Venetian boat par excellence but the most famous is the gondolini regatta of champions, that cross the Grand Canal to the finish in front of the famous "machina", a spectacular and impressive floating stage in front of the Palace of Cà Foscari. The nickname ' Regatta ' was given only in 1899 on a proposal by the Mayor of Venice Philip Grimani
