FEAST OF REDEEMER 2021

Add to bookmark Add to favourities

The  Feast of Redeemer is the festival most felt by the inhabitants of the city of Venice, it is a Venetian tradition of over 400 years and is celebrated on the third Sunday of July on the Giudecca island and in the San Marco basin.

The tradition of the Redeemer dates back to 1577 and recalls the end of a terrible plague, celebrated with the construction of the homonymous basilica by Palladio on the Giudecca island, which can be reached by crossing a huge bridge of boats 330 meters long. The celebrations therefore include the function presided over by the Patriarch and the religious procession, while the weekend ends with the Regatta on gondolas.

At sunset the boats, decorated with colored balloons and all illuminated, flow into the San Marco Basin and the Giudecca Canal. An abundant dinner based on traditional Venetian dishes is consumed on the boat while waiting for the fireworks display, which begins at 11.30pm
