Punta della Dogana - A new François Pinault's collection

fda9493c9bTheir common denominator is art. Their distinguishing factor is belonging to Venice’s most famous European collection. If the Biennial, which upholds the Lagoon City as the capital of contemporary art, is in a full vortex of preparations, at the Pinault Foundation, too, people are working round the clock.

There are two challenges or, at least, cultural obligations which the French art patron is announcing this year to the international exposition, already more than a century old: at Palazzo Grassi, on the 2nd of June, Il mondo vi appartiene, with the presence of forty artists coming from twenty different countries. These have been summoned to give their interpretation of the world; at Punta della Dogana, on the 8th of April, will begin the eagerly-awaited Elogio del Dubbio.

Let us not forget that Tristan Tzara and Bertolt Brecht were the first to create their elogies to doubt, already decades ago, as a motor of invention, free action device and place for artistic fertility, against all schematism. This exposition is proceding with more intimacy; it is a glance turned inward, toward that emotive state in which artists move between their work and the stimuli that they perceive in the strength and in the fragility of the human soul.

In the halls are present some of the most emblematic works from the 1960s until today, which underline, once again, Pinault’s care and freedom as a collector. All of these works are flanked by creations of new artists on the Italian scene. There are two site specific installations created by Julie Mehretu and Tatiana Trouvé as their personal reflection on the fascinating theme of doubt, side by side with works by Donald Judd, Maurizio Cattelan, David Hammons, Edward Kienholtz, Paul McCarthy, Roni Horn, Marcel Broodthaers, Chen Zhen, Sigmar Polke, Subodh Gupta and many others. To bring together and document their efforts, there is a very beautiful Electa catalogue in three languages.
