Summer Season at the Fenice Opera House
The 2011 Opera Season at the Fenice Theatre will accompany us in the sultry months with a series of fine appointments, among which is A Midsummer Night's Dream, composed by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
The great Venetian theatre will return to opera at the end of August, on the 27th, with the first season performance of La traviata.
Teatro La Fenice is celebrating the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the Unification of Italy. Reproposed in the successful production by Robert Carsen and Patrick Kinmonth that opened the first opera season of La Fenice in November 2004 after its reconstruction and which, reproposed in 2007, 2009 and 2010, is on its way to becoming a classic of the Venetian Opera House's repertoire, and a date to be counted on in the September programme.
Direction is by Robert Carsen (assistant director Christophe Gayral), set and costumes by Patrick Kinmonth, choreography by Philippe Giraudeau, and lighting by Robert Carsen and Peter Van Praet.
A melodrama in three acts to the libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the drama by Alexandre Dumas (son), La Dame aux Camélias, it made its debut at La Fenice on 6th March 1853 and, as was the case in April 1854, will be presented in that version.
Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini
The opera programme in September 2011 is particularly intense: La Traviata and Don Giovanni are on the programme at Teatro La Fenice while from 2nd September 2011 onwards Teatro Malibran is to be venue to another nineteenth century cornerstone of Italian opera (and cultural identity): Gioachino Rossini Il Barbiere di Siviglia, a comic melodrama in two acts to the libretto by Cesare Sterbini based on the same-named comedy by Beaumarchais, back on the programme with the same successful production by Bepi Morassi (direction), Lauro Crisman (set and costumes) and Vilmo Furian (lighting), performed at Teatro Malibran in 2003 and then once again at La Fenice in 2008 and 2010.
After its première, initially a fiasco, at Teatro Argentina in Rome on 20th February 1816, the opera met with resounding success during its repeat performances, after which it became one of the most frequently performed operas, and Rossini's masterpiece par excellence.

Don Giovanni by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
The 2011 foresees the presentation of an ambitious project of Mozart's work by a talented team of young performers, offering an original and unique interpretation of Da Ponte's trilogy. The first part of the project, which will go on to include Le Nozze di Figaro and Così fan tutte, is on Tuesday 20th September 2011 at 19.00 (subscription cycle A) with the revival of the successful production of Don Giovanni, by Damiano Michieletto (direction), Paolo Fantin (set), Carla Teti (costumes), Luca Scarzella (video direction) and Fabio Barettin (lighting), first performed at Teatro La Fenice in May 2010.
A comic two-act drama to a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte based on the novel El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra by Tirso de Molina through the libretto Don Giovanni o sia Il convitato di pietra by Giovanni Bertati, Don Giovannni had its première at the Nostitz-Theatre in Prague on 29th October 1787 and is the second of the three masterpieces Mozart created together with the Italian librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte; it is also one of the greatest operatic works of all times.
